Why Palm Cooling Works

A practical place to exchange heat.

The palms contain specialized blood vessels involved in heat exchange. Contact with a cooler surface can transfer heat away from the hand. How much heat moves depends on several factors, including the temperature difference, contact and blood flow.

Palm cooling uses this accessible surface during breaks in activity. It fits into a workout without requiring you to immerse the whole body. A cooler-feeling hand is a useful description of comfort, but it does not by itself establish a change in core temperature or performance.

Research findings vary with the task, the cooling method and the conditions. Treat a response in one exercise as information about that setting, rather than a promise of the same effect in every sport.

For everyday use, follow the device instructions and the practical steps in your plan. There is no need to chase colder temperatures or longer holding times to force a larger result. Keep the focus on a session you can complete comfortably and consistently.

Takeaway

Use cooling within your breaks; judge the response in context.
